In all but a few situations, nitric acid is a good way to form a soluble salt.  If your iron is chemically pure, and finely divided, moderate strength nitric acid should dissolve it.  Concentrated sulfuric and hydrochloric aren't bad ideas either, just a little slow.  If you've got nothing but time, oxalic acid forms a stable complex with iron, as well.
