Title: Hess's Law
Post by: chemfreakk on March 17, 2005, 07:18:52 AM
Hello!

My aim is to find the enthalpy change for the decomposition of sodium hydrogencarbonate. It is possible to determine this indirectly by determimg the enthalpy changes for the reactions between sodium carbonate and HCl, and sodium hydrogencarbonate and HCL.

The overall equation is:

2NaHCO3   -----------------------------> Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2

The separate two reactions with HCl are (correct?):

2NaHCO3 + 2HCL ----------------> 2NaCl +  2H2O + 2CO2

Na2CO3 + 2HCL -------------------> 2NaCl +  H2O + CO2

Now what is the Hess’s diagram for this ?

Is the following diagram correct: ??

2NaHCO3   -----------------------------> Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2

   2NaCl +  2H2O + CO2
Thanks in advance  :)
