Title: ethylene glycol metabolism
Post by: tinuviel on March 29, 2005, 09:29:36 PM
I was just wondering if you could help me find out the actual chemical formulas and the interactions between the reactants and the enzymes in ethylene glycol metabolism. I already know that the metabolic pathway is as follows:

Ethylene glycol + alcohol dehydrogenase = glycoaldehyde + aldehyde dehydrogenase = glycolic acid + lactate dehydrogenase/ glycolic acid oxidase = glyoxylic acid/ glyoxalate + various enzymateic pathways = oxalic acid.

What I need to find out, is the actual BALANCED CHEMICAL EQUATIONS of the reactions, and specifically WHAT the enzymes do (eg, oxidation, removal of water ect). I have been searching for days to no avail!!~!
PLEASE HELP it would be MUCH APPRECIATED!!
thanks!!!

HO-CH2-CH2-OH => HO-CH2-CHO => HO-CH2-COOH => OCH-COOH => HOOC-COOH
