Title: # bonds TMs make
Post by: redfox on May 18, 2008, 01:12:31 PM
This is an organometallic chemistry question - is this the right place for it?
Apologies if not!

I'm just wanting to know how I can determine the amount of bonds a
transition metal will make. If someone wants to reel them off that's great,
it's not for an assignment or anything, would kinda like to see some proof
tho:)

Ta very much!

:D

Jesus, the bonding with organometallics is very tricky. If you just want a 1st order approximation answer, they tend to make 18e- molecular bonding orbitals and have 6 molecules attached to them.

in 0 oxidation state I believe they make different numbers of bonds to
various ligands. Fe, for instance, usually makes 6 bonds, but that's the
only one I'm sure of. Doesn't nickel only make 2 tho? Or is that ridiculous?
I'm sure I've seen somewhere that's all it makes...

Thanks for input anyway:)
