Title: Monopoles
Post by: Corvettaholic on April 23, 2004, 12:39:31 PM
Physicts have been trying for years to create monopole magnets without success, but are there any magnets where the poles have different strengths? Or maybe the magnet has a shape where the influence of one pole is neglible and the other pole is uber-strong? Also, since monopole magnets are currently unproducable, are there monopoles at the atomic or subatomic level?

A magnet has two poles of equal strength but you can make both poles on one side making it like a monopole. Do a search for "Hablach array".

Those hablach arrays are awesome! I want one!

Thought of a good use for it too! So you have a metal rod, which is tapered so its more of like a long long cone. The hablach array is at the bottom, in a ring configuration. around this big metal cone thing is a big coil, so you have a conical electromagnet. Energize it opposite to the field the inner part of the ring has, and it'll go shooting off one direction, until it bumps into the opposite pole. Makes for a good brake so it won't go flying off, and the upward pulling motion could be useful for something, maybe to operate a piston for a vacuum pump? Reverse the current and it'll work in reverse! You COULD use a standard NIB ring magnet, but it looks like the hablach arrays have a much stronger field, therefore the entertainment factor is increased.

I have designs I created for a 3 dimensional array if your interested.

I'm having trouble visualizing that, you got any pictures? What would you do with it anyway?

The top part is a 2D hablach array. The bottom part is sections of a 3D hablach array, the numbers tell you what section goes where, 1 is at the bottom 4 is at the top. The arrows show what direction magnetic north is pointing. The Xs are when the arrow is pointing up, the blank squares are pointing down.

Oh and don't copy this before I have a chance to test/patent it.  ;D

Ever built this thing? I'm wondering being 3d, that it won't work any better than a regular 2D one, because the bottom layer of magnets might cancel each other out, or simply not reinforce the top layer. Maybe I should build it just to make sure. I think the best way of construction would be to get cubed NIB magnets, and a lot of C-clamps to hold the thing together. Oh, and superglue.

Use epoxy. I just dont have enough time to build ALL my ideas.  ;D

I'm sorry, my fingers are itching to remove that pic from a public board. Ill PM it to you.  ::)

Edit: I sent it by email.

Awesome, I'll put it on my list of things to build, unless you get to it first. My house will be in upheavel for the next month, so I can't build anything for a while, then at some point this summer I'm stuck going to Korea for a month.. but after that... let construction commence!
