this is called methyphenyl acetate
but I was just wondering why can't it be called benzyl acetate instead? this is a benzyl group right?

i beleive there both accepted....wiki and answers says the IUPAC name is benzyl acetate, then some other sites say tht the IUPAC name is methylphenyl acetate

Benzyl acetate is different from the structure posted by the OP. Benzyl acetate is Ph-CH2-O-(C=O)-CH3. The correct name for the compound posted by the OP is methyl phenylacetate. An acetate group is the carbonyl plus a methyl or methylene next to it.
