Title: Russell saunders
Post by: ixi on September 13, 2008, 07:27:20 PM
Give the Russell saunders term symbol (ground state only) for the following atoms and ions

Fe +2

here's what i have so far:

Fe +2  [Ar]3d^6
Sum of Ml = 2
L = 2 ---> D
S= (1/2) + (-1/2)+ (1/2) + (1/2) + (1/2) + (1/2) = 2
2(S)+1 = 5
J= l L-S l . l L+S l = 0 ... 4

so, would the ground state be

5 D 4  ?
