Title: Line structures and BP's
Post by: Milsy on October 04, 2008, 02:12:14 AM
Any clues with this question would be very helpful!

Use your understanding of the factors that influence physical properties of organic molecules to draw line structures of the following compounds arranged in order of increasing boiling point.

O
SH
CH3CH2CH2OH
HOCH2CH2OH
HOCH2COOH

Lowest BP to Highest BP
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Google will help you answer the question about the structures, otherwise, you should also be working on drawing out the line structures for those compounds.

Then what do you know about how linear shape and vanderwals forces affect the boiling points of compounds?  What other types of bonding forces can increase the boiling point of a compound?  Are there any of those present?  Anything else that can affect the boiling point of a compound?
