Title: EAN rule
Post by: alexmahone on December 31, 2008, 06:56:45 AM
Q Which of the following complex ions does not satisfy the effective atomic number (EAN) rule.

(A) [Pt(NH3)4]2+
(B) [PtCl4]2-
(C) [PtCl6]2-
(D) [Fe(CN)6]3-

My attempt: EAN of metal in a complex = At. No - Oxdn state + 2 x co-ordination no.
EAN of Pt in (A) is 78-2+2x4=84
EAN of Pt in (B) is 78-2+2x4=84
EAN of Pt in (C) is 78-4+2x6=86
EAN of Fe in (D) is 26-3+2x6=35

For the rule to be satisfied, the EAN of Pt and Fe should be 86 and 36 respectively.

The correct answer is (D). Where have I gone wrong in my calculation of (A) and (B)?
