Hi i am a second year chemistry undergraduate and have a quantum mechanics assignment due in and was wondering if i could have some help on the final question.
Azulene C10H8 is an aromatic hydrocarbon containing delocalised 'pi' elctrons. As a model of this p-electron system, consider the mobile electrons to fit in a rectangular 2-D box of dimensions 5.00 x 4.65 amstrongs
i.) how many pi-electrons does azulene have?
ii.) identify the quantum numbers for the HOMO and LUMO of the of the pi-electron system.
iii) calculate the wavelength (in nm) of the lowest-energy absorption transition.
Grateful for any help you can offer. Thanks.

so, which questions can you answer?
i.) count the electrons
ii.) iii.) use the formula for a particle in a 2-dimensional box

That is just one of the 7 questions in the assignment. I could do part i and hazard a guess at ii but i dont really have a clue about iii :'(

the habit on this forum is that you present what you have and then someone tells you if you are correct and helps you out with what you are missing
