Ethanol in human body is oxidized to CH3CHO (ethanal),and this compound is responsible for the intoxication. In the next step of oxidation an acetic acid is formed. Some peple since genetic defect cannot oxidize aldehyde to acetic acid and for them ethanol is much more toxic.
