In crystal field theory, crystal field splitting energy is measured in form of  :delta: or Dq.

Here i have some problem that is 1 :delta:o is equal to 10Dq.
Can some tell me that on what base that relation is derived and what does Dq really stand for.

I think it is just a definition makes calculation and memorizing easier.
