Title: Solubility/Extraction
Post by: Vitalspace on September 15, 2009, 08:11:49 PM
Sodium acetate (CH3COO-Na+) is the conjugate base of the organic acid acetic acid. If you add some sodium acetate to a mixture of diethyl ether and water, which liquid would you expect the sodium acetate to dissolve in? Why?

Thanks!

Sodium acetate (CH3COO-Na+) is the conjugate base of the organic acid acetic acid.

Just a note, I'm not sure this statement is correct: sodium acetate is the result of (e.g.) a reaction between NaOH and CH3COOH

CH3COOH + NaOH = CH3COO-Na+ + H2O

If you take a look at the dissociation of acetic acid in water you'll easily see what's the conjugate base:

CH3COOH + H2O = CH3COO- + H3O+
