Title: How to create a bad smell
Post by: pongo on October 05, 2009, 05:21:55 AM
Ok, here's a challenge.  I have a holiday house next door which has been beautifully designed so the holiday makers can spend their week's holiday outside.  However their unreasonable noise in a quite neighbourhood is making our lives hell so we'd like a subtle, non intrusive method of making them go inside (after a reasonable hour at night), and thought that a bad smell would be just the trick.  But how do we deliver the bad smell??  Its about 7m from the side of my house to where they tend to sit outside.

I hope you understand that I'm doing this because polite intervention after 11pm usually results in a barage of abuse and their drunk justification that they're on holiday.

Call the police. Otherwise they will do the same once they will know where the stink comes from and it will be you in troubles.

The people who rent the holiday house may be an issue, but the real culprit is the owner who rents it and does not let the tenants know the noise rules.
The community around the area must have rules, which the owner can be held accountable.
Doing tricks on the tenants may make them want to do tricks on you.

Dissolve a sulfide salt in semi-concentrated hydrochloric acid.

Your plan stinks ;)

I realize that other humans can be inconsiderate and that you might be bothered by it. If you truly feel that they are overly intrusive, it is better to contact your local authorities usually with a formal letter describing their behavior with concrete details (direct quotes of things your neighbors said, times of day and duration where they were generating the noise, etc. it might even be a good idea to videotape some of it from a safe distance so that, if the authorities come to question you, you can demonstrate the problem directly). If your neighbors don't respect you, then maybe they respect the police? And if they don't respect the police then at least *they* can do something about it without breaking the law  :)

Thanks guys.  I only resort to this as a last stressed-out resort.  Police are few and far between in our town and are usually sorting out the holidaying drunks in town.  The home owner doesnt seem to hear his phone ring after 10pm...
I appreciate your posts.  Regards. Will try the sulphide salt mix though!  Cheers!

It might serve you right if the wind is blowing the wrong direction and you are hoisted by your own petards.

Anything mixed with sulfur stinks pretty bad, or ammonia. I, likewise as others, would first call the police for disturbing the peace.

Hope this helps,

Mercaptans are the answer my friend.  ;)

H2S is very toxic, so don't make large amounts of that..

But the cops sound like the most practical resource here...
