When I mix icecold sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid solutions, I get a blue colour in the solution and a brown vapour. What species causes the blue colour? Is it nitrous acid? Dinitrogen trioxide? Is there any scientific knowledge of this phenomenon?

Nitric oxides would form the brown vapour
