Post by: Kazik on December 10, 2009, 05:18:54 PM
Hi,
I have a big problem because I'd like to buy PMMA PolyMethylMetAcrylate in powder but I can't find excatly where I can buy it. I found out that I need toluene and that's all.  I have been looknig for this raw material for 2 weeks and I'll be very, very appreciate for your help. Nobody could help me.
I need a help, please!

Why in powder? And why do you need toluene?  :o

Because it's much cheaper in powder than in e.g. in liquid. I need toluene to dissolve pmma. Do you know where I can buy it?

Well, if it is not available as a powder, how can it be cheaper as a powder? ;)

Seriosuly - powder will be already polymerized, liquid is just a monomer. I suppose if you have a piece of plexiglass you can prepare powder by yourself. What do you need it for - do you want to prepare glue?

It is available in powder, I'm sure. Yes, I'd like to prepare glue from pmma powder because I'm going to make transparent trophies from it. How can I prepare powder from plexiglass?? Is it possible? You are very helpful:)

File & drill will give you filings, these should be fine enough.

What kind of trophies? With embedded objects? Or some sculpture-like structures?

Thank you so much for the information, I'm going to call them. That will be trophies(for teamsports, companies for achievements) with embedded objects like ball and so on. As yet we want to try to make transparent trophies and afterwards we'll think about sculpture.
Thank you Borek :D

polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is available from Evonik CYRO.

I like Borek's idea above;
if you only need a small amount of material, then go to a local hardware store, buy a sheet of PLEXIGLAS and then use a piece of sandpaper or a file to shave off some smaller pieces.

It could be good idea but I'd like to make trophies with embedded objects like ball and so on and that's why I need it in powder.
Thanks a lot PolyerKnowHow

Or you can buy PMMA pellets

You could probably find a supplier, and lie to them by telling them the following:
"you are a plastics manufacturer looking to change PMMA supply"
"you need a sample for lab testing"
They may send you a free sample, atleast a kilogram maybe more.

For embedded objects you have to polymerize plexiglas with object inside, neither pellets nor powder will work. Looks like you are from Poland - I believe process was explained and recipes were given in one of the books by Stefan Sękowski.
