Title: Newcomer to Chemistry and needing help identifying a compound
Post by: Panzer336 on January 10, 2010, 06:02:39 AM
Hi I am new to Chemistry and I am trying to identify a compund and was wondering if i could get some help.  My first thought was Methyloentane

          H    H    H
H3C     C    C    C    CH3
        CH3   H    H

Thanks in advance for any help

hi buddy

You can use the ACD labs free software to draw structures else while drawing
bigger structures you may find difficult.

and the answer is right :)

Now, there is a problem with the other answers. Now, they are all correct but lack something. And explanation! Also, you may use the IUPAC website to find a chemical sketch program but I don't know where to find it exactly (haven't used it lately but you don't need to download it).

2-methylpentane is obtained because there is 1 carbon group (meth+yl) and it is at the 2nd carbon (you start numbering from the carbon closest to a carbon group). You get the pentane (as you seem to know) from the carbon chain.
So:

          H    H    H
H3C     C    C    C    CH3
        CH3   H    H
2-meth(yl)pent(ane)
