I'm from California. I'll leave it to the other staff members to describe where they are from. Although most of this can be found, more or less, in the Introduce Yourself thread in the Generic Discussion Forum.

As far as the organization goes. The administrators administrate. The moderators moderate. There are currently 7 administrators, spanning in expertise, activity, nationality and ethnicity.

How can you know each other? Who makes/ creates this website? I think it's Mitch (because he can move the topics... but do the other admins have this ability?)

All admins on moderators (although moderators can only move threads from moderated forums). Somebody crrect me if I am wrong :)

And you are right - Mitch is a spiritus movens of the chemicalforums.

How do we know each other? I have posted for the first time here somwehere in February I think. After some time (and some posts) Mitch has proposed me a vacant moderator position. You have to ask him about his motives :)

I've been involved in the informal chemical education community (which is just a term I made up to describe internet chemistry bboards, websites, etc...) for several years now. Other communities were nice, but there didn't seem to be a good home for Chemists who like answering questions. I knew I could do it better, and with the help of tech savvy people like David we made this website.

The staff is chosen from people who are knowledgeable, write good answers to questions, activity, and also by personality. I've also been known to track talented posters from other internet Chemistry forums and bring them here. I don't know all of the Staff personally, but I've met a few of them in real life at some point..

As Borek said, all the administrators have the same privileges, and moderators have administrative privileges in the subforum they moderate for. The only difference between the other staff and I, is that I pay the bills, so you'll see my name at the bottom of the website. ;)

I too live in California, although a long way from where Mitch is.  I came to the forums for the same reason Mitch started it; I like answering chemistry questions and most of the other science forums don't focus on chemistry.  I also like that this forum is interested in serious research and study and not just how to make drugs and explosives like many other forums.

I started posting with no aspirations other than to help people and then Mitch recruited me like most of the staff.  I think that most of us only know each other through these forums, but the online chemistry community is pretty small so I think we know who's who.

Mitch actually stole me from the www.webelements.com forums.  I was putting together my element collection and had gotten pretty far along with it when he asked me to write some articles.  I then began photographing my elements when people kept asking to see them, and also when the periodic table here at the site started getting more and more complex.  I came over to this website very early in the development and have done my best to try and keep things clean here.  Eventually, Mitch handed over some administrator privilages so that the periodic table and download updates could be handled a bit easier without him having to do everything for me.  Now, I just come and go and clean up the random pigeon poop that drops in here sometimes.  During the summer months, it tends to slow down a bit as school is out, but in the next couple of months things will pick up again.  Hopefully I'll have more free time at that point.  Right now, I'm still anticipating the textbook coming out with my element photos in it, and I'm also trying to figure out some more permanent storage methods for many of my elements which have begun to oxidize over the past few years.

I used to run an online chat channel on Galaxynet that focuses on chemistry and it had a chemistry forum that supports the channel's online activity. I had been an integral part of that informal online community for 2-3years until many regular chatters begin to leave the channel due to the large influx of people who were not interested in chemistry at all. In the end, channel died, together with the forum.

One day, Mitch posted a topic at my forum asking people to check out chemicalforums. I responded promptly and started frequenting this forum. Soon I was invited to be one of the staff here.

Actually to make things more confusing, I'm the moderator at webelements. Yes, the online chemical education niche is completely covered by everyone on this website. Scarry really.

How are the webelements forums going?  Last time I was there it was full of garbage and my anti-virus software kept going crazy as random trojans and virii would try and install themselves when I visited the forums.  Suffice it to say, I quit visiting because of that.   :D
