Some basic research might help.

What sort of laboratory supplies?
Is there a ready market for your merchandise?
Where will you source your products from?
Can you purchase items at a low enough price to maintain a "sell-on" profit margin?

Nobody here will be able to answer that question. You have to make a research on your local market.

Aefcm: You need to tell your friend to IMMEDIATELY start to make a nice looking website and promote the business very much. Website customers will be global and you are not limited to just markets in Addis Abbaba. Prepare a website and connect to an order payment service like PayPal or Moneyex. Go forth and do great things!

He is looking to get into a crowded market. Will he be able to compete on price with the multi-national suppliers?

Also, many small equipment manufacturers may already have licencing agreements to sell through specific suppliers.  He must do the basic ground work first to ensure his proposed business is feasible.

I have no experience in the field other than sourcing materials for the laboratories I've worked in.

"Basic ground work" is an English term which means doing all of the necessary preparation to make the project successful rather than just starting of without thinking.
