What is called a spiking experiment/study while doing HPLC analysis??

It could be a difference in definitions.
1. You introduce (spike) your target compound into clean matrix to see if you can recover it and how much.
2. In some cases you spike compound into actual sample to confirm that the observed peak is what you are looking for: a) the peaks overlaps b) shape of the peak does not change (or it MS or UV spectra does not change)
