Why do physical properties play a role in chemistry if they do not involve any chemical changes?

Physical properties are determined by intermolecular forces which are the forces that act between molecules (hence the name). So I presume that this is why physical properties play a role in chemistry.

Ok, say you want to mix compounds x and y in your lab on a particularly hot day. It was so hot compound x blew up and destroyed your lab. You get fired and now you're homeless.

If only you'd have known that physical property...
