Title: Ni(NO3)2 + KSCN --> Ni(SCN)2: balanced eqn. & identification of by-product
Post by: Noff on October 16, 2010, 06:43:10 PM
Is the reaction #1 or #2?

#1: Ni(NO3)2·6H2O + 2KSCN :rarrow: Ni(SCN)2 + 2KNO3 +6H2O

OR

#2: Ni(NO3)2·6H2O + 2KSCN :rarrow: Ni(SCN)2·6H20 + 2KNO3

The reaction solvent was butanol.

Secondly, upon filtration of the product mixture, a residue was obtained; I'd like to ask the identity of that residue (the filtrate was the Ni(SCN)2).
