How important is it to wash after spilling acetone on your skin,

Hey,

Perhaps it's due the really laid back attitude at my lab but, as far as I know, the worst thing that can happen after spilling a little acetone on your skin is getting dry skin.

I've done it plenty of times and know people who have done it plenty of times, and don't know of anything other than dry skin as a consequence. You should consult MSDS, though, to be sure.

Hi there,

My basic advice: Keep the affected area out of strong sunlight. If it feels dry, buy some good moisturising cream and apply that regularly to the affected area to keep it as moist as possible. I recommend Nivia E45; it has worked brilliantly for my sodium hydroxide burns. :)

My lab is about as strict as it gets but they leave wash bottles of acetone lying around like its water. Thats the one solvent I get on myself regularly. I think as long as its pure, its relatively harmless to get on your skin.

there is not big damage, you fell cool at the first time and then you feel your skin dry

repeated exposure is likely to cause contact dermatitis but like the other posters my lab tends to be a bit slack! I watch out a bit more because I have eczema and acetone in a cut stings like hell!
