Does Aluminium and Silicium d orbital?If not,why?For example Sulphur has d orbital.On what,it depends?

Hehe, it seems that this is taught a lot and I do not believe it. It is commonly referenced that S uses a D-orbital to make its bonds. To me that is just crazy because the nearest D-orbital is going to be an INSANE jump in energy. I am not the only one, every teacher I have refused to teach that part and always said the book was wrong.
