EDit: seems you Can't edit after somebody has post after you..?

Edit: here how the plastic spoons starts(white blase coat or black base coat, both work)

white base coat
(https://www.chemicalforums.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthumbnails11.imagebam.com%2F8250%2Ff649ed82491123.gif&hash=2f2dd329ebfc2797293e92b72a470d5e7429ccc8) (http://www.imagebam.com/image/f649ed82491123)

black base coat

add some color to the protecting varnish and you end up with this..

Is the metal silver or chromium?
If it is silver, is it using hydrazine sulfate and silver nitrate reaction or is it like the Tollen's test or one of the other tests that involve silver nitrate?

I've tried the spray can's which claim to do chrome but it doesn't do it justice compared to the type of spraying system that nicamarvin is using. Spray can's are usually a big waste of time effort and money since the top's of them leak its hard to get a consistent spray which doesn't drip.

But really awesome job nicamarvin looks like you had it sprayed professionally keep up the great work.

its real silver and the reducer used is a diluted form of formaline(Hydrazine also works, is used by Alsa own Spray on chrome system)

Hi ! I found that it's not easy at all to finish spray on chrome. There're a lot of process to do. Well, I have problem about being yellow and last process so I have two questions to ask. First, how to avoid being yellow and What kind of lacquer do you use for the last process? Thanks  ;D

its always going to be yellow, that´s really not an issue, the last clear coat(Lacquer) needs to be tinted with violet color(mix of blue and magenta) to give it a chrome look, remember how yellow is the oposite of vilote? they will cancel each other out

Post by: nicamarvin on April 29, 2012, 03:40:25 PM
you will see how the lines looked, in this pic I was using untinted clear that´s why it looks yellow instead of chrome, the tinted clear goes after.
(https://www.chemicalforums.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1085.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj437%2Fnicalandia%2FBusBumper9.jpg&hash=2a6dd12ec733b822301f72ad1816aee23828ed51)

the line you see is a pole not a white line, you can see how the violet tinted clear can turn this thing into a chrome look a like

english is a must here, but its ok buddy I will be glad to help you out, I was the one that stated that in 6 months spectra chrome clear did failed(with pics of a guy that use spectra, I have not been able to test them yet), but I believe that a good clear coat and enough of it(about 3 to 4 coats) is enough to protect it after 6 months,

Ok then am gonna use english, ok i told you that am about to try this system here in Mex, i did a research on how to get them raw chemicals, and i already did with them AgNO3 and SnCl2, with the last one am gonna have to do a more deeper research due the fact that in the market there are three types: anhydrous, dihydrate and pentahydrate,  also i was thinking about giving the fresh silver deposition a protective layer of SnCl2, have you tried this out yet? and then the poly topcoat, also, if you happen to need any help on your water and solvent based coatings feel free to ask me about resins and additives

I´ve been thinking about using some kind of passivation on the silver layer but so far the only experiment that I have done with this in mind has not produce any good results, I have tried spraying the tin for silver(sensitizer) on a fresh silver layer but it destroys the silver layer, I think is the acidic nature of the stannous chloride. but then again the silver layer is very thin and weak, in a hot day i was sweating alot and one sweat drop on the silver layer and it left a mark..

its actually a silver mirror formula that I bought off the internet, you see when you are dealing with this process you want to reduce the complexity as much as possible, eliminating the variables will give you better results, I did try a home made silvering formula but it was not giving me the consistency needed for a business

2k means it has been catalized with a hardener, thats all, I only use this type of coating because it has good quality and durability

Hi Nicamarvin, Please can you give some details of the kind of DIY chemicals you used for your spray on chrome experiment. So far I understand the base coat should be 2K black or white. What do you apply next?, What do you use as an Activator / sensitizer, do you use Stannous Chloride? can this be made DIY?, Silver Nitrate can be made but what "strength" ( % ) is best. Please what is the step by step process?. I have watched your video when you were using hand spray bottles and I was very impressed, I would like to try the same thing as it is not expensive and I will waste a lot of chemicals before I get it right. Please help. Many thanks, Charlie

Hi Nicamarvin,

Have you ever tried making your own Stennous Chloride using Tin and Hydachloric acid? Also Silver Nitrate can be made from Silver and Nitric Acid. The problem I have got is the transportation of hazardous chemicals to where I live. I have to try and make my own chemicals for this test. Please let me know if you have managed to make your own DIY chemicals, and if so what, for Spray Chroming.

Many thanks,

Charlie

I got the qoutations from different well reputed companies that sells spray chrome chemicals and the minimum i got is for $25 for 1ltr diluted set whereas the inhouse cost of the chemicals is $5 for a ltr set.
If anyone is using imported chemicals then let me know, i wanna compare the results and for that I'll ask u guys to replace each step with mine so i get to know which chemical of mine needs some alteration,
Let me know if any body willing to help

We will discuss the wetting agent or so called activator or sensitizer and reducer of salt solution later, first i want to comfirm the chemistry of my salt solution so called silvering solution A, reason is that its the most expensive solution among all of the rest.
For 1 litre diluted solution, i took 2.5gm silver nitrate in 500ml distilled water and while stirring i added concentrated amonia drop by drop until the solution becomes black then turns clear again (3ml approx), this means the silver nitrate is disloved.
Then i took another beaker and dissolved 7.5gm sodium hydroxide in 500ml distilled water. Then i mixed this solution to my sliver nitrate solution, the mixture will turn black again then i add amonia again drop by drop (7ml approx) until it turns into clear solution.
This is my salt solution.
You guys can use it with your company provided reducer and check the result, please do let me know the result.
NOTE: use sliver nitrate, sodium hydroxide and amonia Lab grade only.

Guys, I've decided to lock this thread.  I've made it sticky, so it will always be at the top, because this is a great thread, but it has run out its course.

nicamarvin: has done a pretty impressive thing, he's taken the silver mirror reaction, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tollens%27_reagent#In_silver_mirroring, and used it to make an excellent automotive finish.  He's used his expertise in finishing to be able to select he proper base-coat, tint the silvering, and provide a good clear-coat.  If anyone wants to know more, they can read the thread from the beginning, check out the other finishing board links, or check out youtube.

nicamarvin:, if you feel like you have to add something, please send a PM a MOD: or ADMIN:, and we'll help out.

However, the endless posts, "This is awesome, email me how to do this" are going to have to stop now.
