Title: Determining percentage of chlorine in a product
Post by: heyimchrislim on September 10, 2005, 04:49:57 AM
I have a investigatory project in school and i need the process of determining the percentage of a product. I have searched on the internet and in books but i cant seem to find it. If anyone knows the process i would be very grateful!  ;D

What product?

It will be probably some soluble salt containing chlorides.

Argentometry is most likely a way to go.

Titrate with AgNo3 titrant. Ag will bond to the Cl- ion.

But do not dump down drain as you will be forming AgCl.

Check  for ammonia - it form soluble complex with AgCl

also you might want to look into the volhard titration

If it's ionic chloride you can try to titrate dirctly by AgNO3 (in acidic HNO3 aq media).
If it's organic chloride youy have to do a basic hydrolysis (with NaOH or pyridine with heating for 1h for exemple) and then try to titrate with AgNO3 (in acidic aq media)
