Title: Boiling point of a mixture of pentane and hexane
Post by: LHM on March 01, 2011, 04:52:21 PM
If you had a 1:1 mixture of pentane and hexane (boiling point of pentane = 36°C and boiling point of hexane = 69°C), how do you know what the boiling point of the mixture will be, in terms of like, being less than 36°C, being between 36°C and 69°C, or being above 69°C? And how do you know if a mixture is an azeotrope if you're just given the two components?

I know it has to do with the strength of their intermolecular forces, but I've always felt like it's never been something I've completely understood.
