Title: Ion equivalence and Conductivity :)
Post by: . on July 12, 2011, 05:06:46 PM
Conductivity was investigated of 6 different salts... at 0.1M, 0.05M and 0.025M
The salts were....magnesium sulphate, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, sodium nitrate, sodium carbonate and calcium nitrate. Sodium carbonate and Calcium nitrate had the highest record conductivity each time.... is this due to ion equivalence? as they have 3 ions and the rest have 2?
or is it they other factors that affect conductivity?
any help would be appreciated :) thank you :)

migration has a lot to do with it as well.
hydrochloric acid conducts much better than sodium chloride of the same molarity, even though they have the same number of ions.
each ion has a specific conductivity (from which the conductivity of the salt is made up)

but you are partially right as well, more ions per mole means of course better conductivity per mole.
