Title: Product of propanal and NaOMe + MeOH
Post by: andorrak on October 13, 2011, 10:47:32 PM
I am slightly confused. I know when I add a strong base and h20 the oxygen will lose the hydrogen.

But in the mechanism in the subject, of propanal and NaOMe and MeOH. Can the MeOH protonate the Oxygen?

Giving 1-Propanol?

Look up aldol reactions.

Why didn't the answer help you? Did you not do what it said?

Andorrak: From your first post, you seem to think that propanal will be reduced to 1-propanol. What would be your reductant then?

Personally, I would have followed Doc Oc's suggestion of looking up the aldol reaction. He really gave a great advice.
