What is the major assumption of the shell model?

what is the shell model? I am not sure if the electron configuration model that I am taught is called the shell model.

It is not the same thing, but the basic concepts are very similar.  Wikipedia has a good couple paragraph summary of it with a pretty picture, so I will direct you there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shell_model
