Title: what does "mu" means in this case.

In scientific papers (mainly environmental science) the concentration is often expressed as "mu g/L";
what exactly the "mu" means? Does this expression stands for micro-gram per liter? Can I always use the word "mu" instead of the lower case Greek letter Mu?

 Yes, we use the Greek letter mu - μ to mean the prefix micro. It may be a convention just for environmental science, or a convention for the publisher of the particular journal, all intended to make it easier for authors and publishers.
