Title: Clove Oil Extraction Exp?
Post by: _Weirdo_0.o on October 16, 2012, 06:03:12 PM
There is a question I do not understand at all at the back of the lab packet:

a.) Clove oil contains about 10% of a minor component that can be hydrolyzed to yield the major component and acetic acid.  Deduce the structure of the minor component, which has the molecular formula C12H14O3.
b.) The percentage of the major component of clove oil actually increases as the cloves are steam distilled.  Explain why and give an equation for the reaction involved.

I do not know how to deduce the minor component's structure.  I think I can handle B haha

Thank you! :]

I suppose that will depend on the structure of the major component, that is essentially the minor component minus the hydrolyzable acid.
