Title: structure elucidation
Post by: SinkingTako on December 16, 2012, 11:45:39 AM
Part of the question as follows :

Compound X has the formula C10H12. On reaction with bromine, it gives B C10H12Br8. X decolourises hot acidified potassium permanganate , and give compounds E C3H6O4 and F C4H4O6 As the only organic products, together with effevescence. Determine the various compounds.

E is probably glyceric acid. (Which is strange as it is a diol and hot permaganate was used? ) F is probably methanetricarboxylic acid? As X does not give C10H12Br10 it probably contains a ring somewhere.

This is all that I can figure out for now... I have trouble finding out what X is (and justify the diol)... thank you!

What do you think causes the effervescence . How is that formed .
