Post by: AbdirahmanSL on February 06, 2013, 03:06:32 PM
Hello Everyone

I am undergraduted in General Science in Qatar Univeristy. I am thinking of majoring in Chemistry, so in this semester, Spring 2013 i have either to take General Chemistry II 102 or Inorganic Chemistry I 221, which one is easier to study? i will post course description for each .

General Chemistry II 102 :

Gases and States of Matter. Properties of Solutions. Rates of Reaction and Chemical Equilibrium. Acids and Bases and Acid-Base Equilibria. Solubility and Complex Equilibria. Thermodynamics and Equilibrium. Electrochemistry.

Inorganic Chemisty I  221 :

Valence-Shell Electron-Pair Repulsion Model. Bonding theories. Symmetry and symmetry elements and point groups. Transition metals and coordination chemistry.

your help will really be appreciated.

Note :

102 and 221 are course numbers

There is a convention, that the course's numbered in the 100's are introductory, and courses numbered in the 200's are more advanced.  This appears to be the case with these two courses, given the topics they cover.  Try to compare with other courses offered in other disciplines in your university guide to see if this continues to be true.

I can't tell you which to take.  You may be required to take the introductory course first.  You may want to, even if its not required, to insure you have the background you need.  You may not want to waste your time and money on a basic review, however.

If you talk to a faculty member, they may be able to help more, they can compare you previous work to what the classes demand, they may know of your previous work in some way, or they can even (informally) quiz you to see if you understand the topics you need to take the course.  You can also browse the required text for the courses to see if you understand them.
