Hi:
My supervisor that xylene is a pain to use as a solvent. Is this true? If so, why? I don't get it!

Possibly due to its reactivity with your reaction or its isomers or its high boiling point (for concentration purposes).

Solvents with a relatively high boiling point are more difficult to remove via rotary evaporation. What advantage would xylene have over, say, toluene?
