Title: Purification by removing ions

Hi,

I have been trying to synthesize a compound using 1,2,4,5-benzenetetraamine tetrahydrochloride but i need to remove the chlorides and then purify the tetraamine.

any ideas?

Can you explain why you need to isolate the free base? Can you not just generate it in situ[/u] by adding 4 equivs of base?

You could generate the free base by a basic wash (though the free base is probably water soluble and might be a pain to extract from the aqueous). An altenative might be to apply the hydrochloride to a short column of strongly acidic ion exchange resin, which will should bind the amine, and then wash out the HCl by eluting with water before recovering the amine by eluting with dilute aqueous ammonia. I have used the ion exchange method many times to get water soluble amines in free base form.
