Title: Cavendish's equation in discovering hydrogen
Post by: Perdendosi on February 08, 2006, 09:10:07 PM
Hi everyone,

Henry Cavendish is famous for having discovered hydrogen. I know that he reacted mercury with an acid to produce hydrogen and a salt. Does anyone know the acid that he used?

Much thanks!

Mercury is unreliiable for this reason. Cavendish collected gases over mercury. He obtained hydrogen by reaction of H2SO4 or HCl with unindentified metals (may be Sn, Zn or Fe)
