Title: propylene oxide in storage
Post by: Babcock_Hall on June 10, 2013, 09:57:56 AM
I am considering using propylene oxide in an alkylation of cysteine.  We have some in bottle in a can that is at least 10 years old, but it has never been opened.  I am not aware of any decomposition problems.  Is it OK to use as is?

If it hasn't been opened then it should be OK, run an NMR to be sure.

Thanks; it is in a sure-seal bottle.

Styrene oxide polymerizes pretty fast on storage. I don't know if PO has a similar problem.
