Title: What does *delete me* in posts, messages and thread titles mean?
Post by: Archer on August 11, 2013, 03:25:57 AM
I have seen this a couple of times, is it automatic or does it mean something I am not familiar with in this and/or other forums?

Yes its automatic if you put "help me" it gets replaced by *delete me*  It's meant to encourage posters to use useful thread titles.

The forum software offers the option to censor "naughty words" of the Admin:'s choosing with some other words.  It's sort of a running gag, but "Helpme Helpme of please, helpme" is a naughty word 'round here.

Well, I can try to tell you to -- f&#$ off.  Or I can try to not be such an intolerable -- *Ignore me, I am a weenie*.  Or if you're a businessman visiting Sydney, let me tell you about services that provide attractive young *Ignore me, I am dishonest*.  Or if you're a gambling man, where you can find *Ignore me, I am dishonest* games.

Thing is, someone may want to discuss the statistics involved in Texas Hold'em.  Or may want to talk about a chaperonin escorting a transmembrane protein.  Or make a joke where someone is called "an opening in a mule."  And its clear from the context what -- f&#$ off means.  So the auto-correct either interferes or really doesn't effect forum regulars in any way.  Its just that this sort of language is so common with spammers who use bots and don't even read their posts, that it lets someone who sees it before a Mod does know that -- yes -- we are aware something is up.

I did a "chemical s#*$" on someone's thread about NMR the other day. I noticed a while later and was able to amend it before it was too late.

It reminded of me when I set my colleagues PhD thesis to "find and replace" all mentions of the word shift :) Laugh? Me, yes, him, not so much.

*Delete me*?

That's an automatic joke hard coded into the forum ;)

So it doesn't mean for thread starter to instruct the mods to delete the thread? In some other online forums, that is what it means.

No. Besides, per forum rules we don't delete accounts nor posts.

That's good to know all posts are archived for future internet searchers to find
