Title: Organic Chemistry vs Quantitative Chemistry
Post by: webassignbuddy on December 14, 2013, 07:45:15 AM
I took Ochem II and Quantitative Chemistry both at the same time...
While I got jipped in Quantitative Chemistry and ended up with a solid B (even though I entered the final with an A- and other people who entered the final with an A and got a B- or C+ for the class, according to our teacher), I got an A- in Ochem II after retaking it (I didn't do as well on the final as I wanted to, which was extremely hard, so be grade went from an A to an A- because I got an 85 on it...but anyways, I'll take an A- in Ochem any day.)
But, are you guys finally proud of me? :D

That was a legitimate question but on another note...   ;D
Will med school look down on people who've taken 3 Ochems though?
Here are my grades for Ochem I and II

Organic Chemistry I (Fall 2012): C
Organic Chemistry II (Spring 2013): C+ (average was somewhere in the mid-high 60s)
Organic Chemistry II (Fall 2013, retake): A- (average is a 77.30, C+)

I've been told that they look at trends. That's a good improvement no?
Now I have to take Biochemistry, which I hear mixed things about at my school (it's "easy and all memorization" or "it's hard and completely different from organic chemistry").

And people tried to discourage me from retaking Ochem II because they thought not only would it be a "complete waste of my time" but that a C+ in Ochem doesn't mean I should retake it and that I should just settle with that grade and move on. And that it would be hard to do both Quantitative Chemistry (3 credits) and Ochem II (3 credits) in one semester and I'd be better off "taking it at a community college where it's a lot easier" -.-
But I said no because I was eager to prove my competence in Ochem.
And I think my decision and hard work paid off...personally

Hard to give an honest opinion without knowing your GPA and other science course grades to tell whether your a competitive applicant. The fact you retook the class and did well the second time around is good but they will see your prior grades still. I think the best advice to you is work your butt off and get A- or higher in the rest of your sciences (and other classes). If you do that, you should be fine for some medical schools. I know doctors who struggled in organic.... I even know chemists who struggled in organic the first time they took it! It's definitely a learning curve but once you get the hang of it, you realize that it's actually not that hard at all.
