Title: A question on hydrogen bonding
Post by: Maire88 on March 20, 2006, 09:38:14 AM
A compound besides water that would be expected to form hydrogen bonds is....

a.) CH3CH2CH2CH3
b.) CH3CHOHCH2CH3
c.) CH2=CHCH3
d.) CCL4

I have no idea what the answer is, i've read my chapter over and over, can anyone help?

I know that C is Carbon and H is hydrogen, but i don't know when they bond, i think it might be B. because the carbon hydrogen might bond with the oxygen hydrogen, but the cofficents are confusing me. I don't think it's D., because Carbon Chlorine isnt showing a bond. I don't know, am I right about any of that? Thanks for any help you can give me!

The answer is the right one, but strong hydrogen bonds occur only when, in a nutshell, the hydrogen (which is covalently bonded with O, N or F) bonds with an atom of O, N or F. Hydrogen bonds have nothing to do with carbons.
