Title: FREE chemical structure viewing software
Post by: rxnrunner on June 13, 2014, 12:38:39 PM
hi there, I am looking for a structure viewer software that can display pictures for my .mol, .rxn files. Any ideas anyone? Should work on Windows 8 as well.

Cylview (www.Cylview.org) works for most file formats and it's one of the best out there for making high quality images and analyzing structures.

Thanks for replying. These are standalone applications and some of them are not even free. I am looking for some free tool that can display thumbnails for my molecule files. It is not easy for me to identify the content of chemical files by their name so I am looking for something that can show me a thumbnail (small picture) of my structure files. Like I see thumbnails for my image files.
thanks

The programs I posted are all free if you are in the academic sector.

You mean when browsing through folders on Windows explorer? I'm not aware of any tool to do that (ChemDraw doesn't do it), but one workaround is to export a copy of each file as an image (e.g. .gif) - the image file partner of the original file will have a thumbnail in Windows, you can use that to identify the correct structure file.

ok. I found this: http://abhimanyusirohi.github.io/ThumbFish (http://abhimanyusirohi.github.io/ThumbFish), and it works for me. Exporting each file to a image file would be a tedious task for me as I have hundreds of them. Thanks all for suggestions.
