Title: boiling water with ice
Post by: crazybouttennis on March 31, 2006, 08:25:59 PM
My chemistry teacher said that he could boil water using ice without applying any heat to the water.  He said he won a bet from his friends regarding this.  However, he hasn't shown us or told us how he did it.  He only told us that he used to ice to equalize the atmospheric pressure and the internal pressure of the flask he used to hold the water.  I don't why he would make something like this up.  So, I'm curious  ??? , how did he do it?

My take is that the water is preheated and starts to boil once the pressure in the bottle drops. The xperimental setup must be tricky.

Water can boil near 0C under low pressure.
