Title: How to calculate pH of mixture?
Post by: Vishal on January 12, 2015, 08:44:38 AM
Hi friends

Two solution of equal quantity with pH=2 and pH=4 are mixed together. The pH of resultant mixture is
a)4.2        b)3.1     c) 2.3   d)None of them

Please tell me how to calculate the pH of such mixture.

If you were given the concentrations of two solutions of the same solute, and asked what the concentration was after mixing them together, could you calculate that? Yes? Then you can do this. What is the relationship between pH and hydrogen ion concentration?

The way the question is worded it can't be solved, as there is not enough data.

What they probably mean is "two solutions of a strong acid", then the question starts to make sense.
