Title: The strength of hydroxybenzoic acid
Post by: penhimdangyeu on February 24, 2015, 12:48:07 PM
Could you please helping explain about their acidity of o-hydroxybenzoic acid, m-hydroxylbenzoic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid.

I assign o-hydroxybenzoic acid, m-hydroxylbenzoic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid are A,B and C respectively. It said that acidity of A > B > C.

I see there are two effect in these structure:
a) inductive effect (-I) of -OH group in 3 structures but inductive effect decreases from A to C due to the increase of distance from COOH group.
b) mesomeric effect (conjugated effect) (+C) of -OH group in structure A and C while B doesn't have it.
c) mesomeric effect (conjugated effect) (-C) of -COOH in 3 structures

How do these effect impact the acidity?

Thank you very much
