Hi all!
I need help finding my organic unknown.
Here is what I know: there were two chemicals in one.
We separated them, ran solubilities, the IR and the NMR's.
The original mixture was red with no strong oders.
Product 1:
Clear
Temperature of pure product: 78C
Only soluble in water, neutral on litmus.
Ethyl Alcohol?

Product 2:
Pure seperation temp of around 178C
Only soluble in HCl, so amine?
Was red, but instructor was surprised at that.

Honestly, I think there is error in the IR and NMR. More specifically, I do not think the two were separated well enough. We used a condenser to do it, and it for some reason the condensed liquid would not go to the collection flask at the end.

Also, we are permitted to use SDBS, but I just cant seem to get it to work.
