Title: Reagent Question
Post by: SaltySurprise1010 on May 28, 2015, 07:35:32 PM
Hi!
Do you all know a reagent that can give me the product shown in the image attached.  Also is the rest of the synthesis correct?

Start by drawing the product(s) of the reaction drawn as you know them. We'll pick up from there.

The first step of the reaction is possible. But the second step seems to be incorrect.

I think the correct starting material is benzil. Try starting from there

Hint: everything would be correct, but a second step is missing.

From the drawing it appears that you want to convert H of the methyl to COOH Am I right?
why dont you try to put Br group on CH3 by substitution reaction and then convert Br to OH and then COOH
