I don't know how much for beginners is out there, but one book I like is:

Greenwood & Earnshaw, Chemistry of the Elements.

Cotton & Wilkinson's Advanced Inorganic Chemistry has a lot of good information, too, but I find it less easily read.  Take a look at these books in your local bookstore if they have them.  Your local college bookstore might.
