Title: Canadian, Eh?
Post by: P-man on April 26, 2006, 06:31:46 PM
Please tell me if your country is not up there (I took some countries that I think I remember some members being from) and I will add your country to the poll.

I don't think California is on the list, but I put U.S.A.

Population of California: ~33,871,648
Population of Canada:   ~32,516,003

Go Canada! lol

I'm from the US.  You know, you probably should've put up an "other" option in this poll.

I saw a random statistic a few years ago about economies and their ranking.
#1 United States
#2 Japan
#3 California, U.S.

I've never been to California. I live in New Hampshire all the way on the opposite coast. Very interesting numbers lemonoman.  :)

That's ok. I have edited the poll to include the countries demanded.

I don't think California is number 3, maybe more like 5 or 6.

Mitch,
It was a really old statistic and from a sketchy source. But still either way it has to be in the top 10 which means it has a big economy.

How much does gas cost for any of Californians? It's around $2.76 over here last I checked. It probably went up though.

Petrol is $1.30 AUS here, by the way we think that is really expensive!

Per liter or gallon?

I think the brits pay more than a quid per litre (2 pints? lol) of unleaded and diesel is almost un-affordable/-available. In Austria it is approx. ~1€ per litre of diesel, unleaded and super petrol are even more expensive. The germans top us by another 20 euro-cents due to their eco-taxes on fossil fuels.

$1.02 per litre here (Ontario, Canada), which is $3.86 per gallon.

Not bad when comparing to the other prices listed here...

Every other country uses liters. We Americans just happen to be to lazy to switch to the metric system. Our gas is still cheaper than some of the European countries mainly because of taxes I think. Only like $.20 USD federal I think. Then like every state has a tax on gas also. Either something has to be done about gas prices. They don't look like they'll be going down anytime soon. Hydrogen powered vehicles and nuclear power plants to crank electricity (and H when possible). That may be the way of the future unless fusion power pulls through.

Does anyone know about the current status of the investigations by the U.S. government into record profits of the oil companies?

Better now?

I was reluctant to vote as results will have nothing to do with the real site statistics.

Why? I was just seeing who's form where, but mainly comparing the difference between Canadians and Americans...
Title: Re: Canadian, Eh?
Post by: Borek on April 30, 2006, 06:18:18 PM
You will know what are numbers of people that voted, not of people that visited the site. And results of every voluntary vote are skewed, as group voting is not identical with the group researched.

That's very basic sociological/statistical knowledge. Selection of representative group for research is very difficult. In the case of forums it is possible (at least in theory) to calculate statistics not for selected group of users, but for whole population. Such results are always most precise, but also usually too expensive to do.

What about that geovisitors link that used to be around the site? Didn't that show a map with flags for visitors so you could see where they came from?
Title: Re: Canadian, Eh?
Post by: Mitch on April 30, 2006, 08:19:32 PM
Yeah, I got rid of it to make the forums run even faster. I can always add it if people want it back though.

I thought it was a cool thing to see where people were from and how people were spread out.

Hey Mitch do you have the ability to see statistics about where people are from? If you do/can get it easily it would be cool if you posted it.

Cool stats. I found me on the who's on now. Mine is listed as my IP adress with the last piece missing. I guess that's what 2 firewalls gets you (software computer level firewall and network router level firewall).

Someone was viewing the forums from Harvard too.

Google brings quite a few people to the forums also.

A lot of Americans visit this site also.

I found a pie chart break down of countries too.

Yes, I know.  :D
However, in Italy, we call it 'Mortadella', which is also the nickname (not only among his opponents) of our new prime minister, who actually is from Bologna.

I remember buying "Mortadella" at my grocery store...and I keep thinking, "This stuff looks and tastes a lot like bologna".  Now I know why :P

And looking at the sites that refer people to us...we get quite a few (more than I expected) hits from people looking for DRUGS lol...and I won't even ask me why we rank #6 in google when you type "Synthesis of Cocaine".

And this is the best one.

Go to Yahoo! and type in funny math quotes . we're #1 ! hahahahaha
