Title: Web hosting
Post by: pantone159 on May 03, 2006, 09:17:25 PM
Does anybody have recommendations for good places to host websites?
I am using my ISP for mine, now, but I am outgrowing it.

Paid hosting or free hosting? Any specieal features you need? Perl, PHP, Mysql or do you need just basic html? Also, what space/bandwidth requirements.

Paid, but less than I am paying now.  I now pay c. $25/mo extra for bandwidth past what I get for free.

I don't need any special features now, but I might want to try adding them.

The Yahoo! Starter package looks very good at first glance.  For $12/mo, I'd get 5 GB space (about 100 times what I use now), and 200 GB bandwidth, about 25 times what I am using now.  Do you know anything about them?

Never buy anything from Yahoo, there prices are always inflated. Try www.godaddy.com or www.namesecure.com

NameSecure actually seems more expensive than Yahoo.  Their cheapest package is less, $8 vs $12, but the one comparable to the cheapest Yahoo pack is $16.  (Yahoo does have a $25 setup fee which confuses the comparison.)

GoDaddy is cheaper though, for sure.  I didn't see GoDaddy mention anything about PHP or Perl support, however.  (Edit:  Looking at the fine print, the GoDaddy 'Deluxe' plan at $7 does have a slew of this stuff.)  I haven't used those kinds of things yet, but it would probably be a good learning project to mess with them.

Do you know anything about the reliability of the various choices?  Yahoo is the one name I have really heard of before, my knowledge of GoDaddy is only of their silly Super Bowl ads.

A little searching on GoDaddy turned up lots of comments about how bad they suck for web hosting.
So, GoDaddy and NameSecure are now both eliminated from contention.

I did see a number of comments that DreamHost was really nice.  At $10/month, (HUGE storage and bandwidth), they might be in first place now.

I have never done business with them, but I've seen them advertise in magazines before. It's $3 for what seams like a good deal. I would look into it further personally.

A review for 1&1.

Here are some resources you may want to use:

and this may be more helpful than the previous link.

Best of luck.

Thanks.  I finally decided to try HostGator.

This was a lot harder decision than I expected!  It sounds like many providers offer too much for too cheap, and get overwhelmed and can't quite deliver.  Plus, very many 'reviews', or 'top 10 lists' or such are completely corrupt.  Yahoo didn't sound good under further review.

What exactly do you need? Maybe we can just host some of it for you?

as with all things, "you get what you pay for".

A couple of tips:

1. dont pay too far in advance until you are satisfied with hosts' performance
2. If you register a domain name, make sure of the companys' policy on moving your domain to another host if you should ever need to.

I think I have my new host all arranged now, so I won't need to borrow any of your bandwidth.   :)

Now, I am waiting to squeeze all my files through my dial-up connection to the new location.
Then, I'll get to wait for DNS name propogation...

Looking at web page statistics sure is fun.   :)

I had no statistics at all with my ISP/host I have been using.  Now, with my new host, almost all I have so far, is me testing my stuff.  In addition, though, I am now getting ChemicalForums traffic from my new avatar.  (I put the Texas flag back.)  So I get to watch that, while I check my own stuff to debug it.

My sister uses Host Excellence (http://www.hostexcellence.com) and they're quite cheap at $2.95/month which comes with a few nice tools and 5GB of space and 50GB of bandwidth. Their customer service is also good. When comparing them to other cheap deals I think they come out well.

IX Web Hosting (http://www.ixwebhosting.com) also looks very good, they have a cheaper plan at $3.95/month which gives you 10GB of space and 100GB of bandwidth, and a plan at $6.45/month which gives you 20GB of space and 300GB of bandwidth. I haven't found anything which beats them yet.

Award Space (http://www.awardspace.com) is FREEEE so I use them. ;D

1and1.com has hosting for 2.95 a month, with a free domain and a mysql database. But customer servcie sucks. If you need help with anything, they are not helpful. It is cheap and it works. Plus, for a while they are giving away 5 .info domains for free if you buy a service.
Title: HostGator sites were hacked
Post by: pantone159 on September 26, 2006, 01:29:29 AM
The webhost that I picked (HostGator), and thus my website, was recently the victim of an extremely dangerous hack.

Specifically, from around Thu 21 Sep 2006 to 9 pm CT Fri 22 Sep (when I shut my site down), Internet Explorer visitors were not being fed the correct HTML data, but instead corrupted data that included a link to a malicious website that took advantage of a new [zero-day] IE exploit to crap all over people's machines.

At least one of my visitors, who I had enlisted to confirm that it was the website that had issues (as opposed to my local machine), was infected with viruses, pop-ups, and God knows what else.

I noticed that two visitors came to look at my element photos, early (2-3 am Central USA time) on Thu.  In case those are some people from ChemicalForums, you should be watchful for problems on your machines.  The hack may not have started that early, but I currently do not know.

My stuff is down until I am sure that my pages will be served as I entered them, which might be a while.

This is apparently a problem in the 'cPanel' configuration software on servers.  A flaw allowed someone with access to a local account (either a real account or one hacked into) to root the server, and install malicious web server software.  Although only HostGator is confirmed to have been attacked, other hosts are likely vulnerable to this.

Most of the virus/spyware/who-knows crap seems to be new and not yet detected by most scanners.

Note that there are 3 new exploits involved in this:
1 - New exploit in cPanel on servers allowing root access
2 - New exploit in IE allowing arbitrary code execution
3 - New spyware/viruses that are not yet caught by scanners

Yuck, Yuck, Yuck.

Hi there, I'm a new teacher looking for some guidance. I've been tasked with organizing a chemistry contest for students to enter in small groups. That will happen early in September, when the new school year officially starts. The goal is to get them engaged with chemistry in a fun and challenging way. As a young and inexperienced teacher, I could really use some advice on the best platform to host something like this. I want it to be easy to use for both students and teachers. It would also be great if it had built-in templates or options to customize the contest format. My students range from 11 to 14 years old, if that helps target recommendations. I'm open to any and all suggestions you might have! What online tools have you used to run academic contests successfully? Do you have any tips for structuring the contest and writing engaging chemistry problems? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm excited to organize this event for my students, I just need a nudge in the right direction. Thank you!
